Born Tyron Keith Young, The Gift is much more than a name. From childhood, growing up in the mountains of Western North Carolina, Young knew that music was meant to be felt as much as created. He began his journey to understand that music was not only going to shape his life but save it as well. Raised by a spiritual mother Young developed a drive unlike those his age and he began involving himself in church ensembles, musicals, marching bands and choirs of all ages.
While faced with adversity for not being “old enough” Young watched and learned from those around him who felt the same about music. During those years Young learned other valuable lessons that proved to serve him well later in life. The patience, determination, and drive to push through hard times became a part of who he was and still is today.
At the age of 17 however, Young’s music career was threatened when he faced death. Young received word that his liver was failing and had a week to live if he did not get a liver transplant. Days later he was moved to the top of the donor list and received a life saving and changing liver transplantHis liver had failed and left him unable to enjoy his one passion: music. Through hard work and sheer determination, Young began a strict regimen of music therapy that slowly started to heal him in a way medicine could not. After facing death Young knew, more than ever, that music was his life, his gift. Since then Young has been performing as The Gift and giving back to those around him using his passion as the medium.
Upon acceptance into Appalachian State University, Young began a course of study that provided him with a BA in Music Industry Studies with a focus in Vocal Performance. During his time at Appalachian State University, Young continued to grow spiritually, mentally and emotionally. Having recently graduated Young will release his debut EP entitled “The Gift of Choice” that includes the singles “I Can’t Call It” and “Movie Scene.” The gift has assembled a group of musicians who step on the stage and give an organic Rhythm and Blues Jam band performance like youve never seen.  The band plays orginals written by The Gift, as well as feature covers from top R&b and pop artists.
