HOW TO ACTUALLY SELL RECORDS ON AN INDEPENDENT LABEL BY JESSIE SPENCER [Except Fom My New Book "Turning Down Nothin' But My Collar"]

This blog is for new artists who are wet around the ears and really have no idea how the music industry works.

I've been involved in every faucet of the music industry [retail, producing and recording songs and remixes, album cordinator, released  two compilations back to back in 2007] since 1997.

I don't have time to sit in front of a camera and talk for 15 minutes so I wrote this blog. This is just a list of things you need to do if you want to get your music in the stores and eventually in a consumer's hand.

1. Don't Put Out A Mixtape If No One Knows Who You Are

If you don't have a buzz going and nobody knows who you are then don't waste your time making a mixtape. No one's gonna listen to that shit. Ain't nobody got time for that.

Just focus on making real songs with catchy hooks and maybe get a feature with a well known artist and then put out a video and get a buzz going.

What's the point of putting out a mixtape out if you don't even got an album coming out?

Doesn't matter if you're the best rapper on the planet. People have to know who you are and they have to know your music.

I'll give you an example of someone who created their own buzz by posted hundreds of videos on YouTube.

Riff Raff is not the greatest rapper on the planet but the majority of rap fans know who this guy is because he has over 500 videos on YouTube and is a very entertaining guy.

2. How To Get A Buzz Going

Just try to get on other people's songs or appear in the videos and if you stand out fans are gonna want to know more about you.

3. Do What Everybody Else Is Doing

Just listen to the radio and just emmulate [copy] everything the popular artists who are getting the most spins are doing.

4. STAY AWAY FROM WISHY WASHY PEOPLE [AKA WEIRDOS]

If a producer is constantly in your face everyday and offers you FREE beats then that man is a potential serial killer/stalker. Stay away from this dude. He has a secret agenda.

5.  Stay Away From Producers/Singers/Rappers Who Don't Want To Sign Work-For-Hire Contracts

A work-for-hire contract is just a way to f-ckin' headaches in the future.

Female R&B/Neo-Soul Artist SZA Co-Directs Her "Teen Spirit" Video

SZA says she co-directed her "Teen Spirit" video in order to "live and die by my own decisions."

SZA says she has a specific reason she wanted to co-direct the video for her “Teen Spirit” song.

“I wanted to live and die by my own decisions,” SZA says of video, according to vogue.com. “From color correction to set choice to dressing myself in dirty T-shirts and random Marni pieces and refusing a stylist and makeup artist…I figured if I was going to fail, I’d do it on my own terms.”

SZA, who co-directed the “Teen Spirit” video with APLUSFILMZ, is signed to Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE), whose roster also includes Black Hippy's Kendrick Lamar, Ab-Soul, ScHoolboy Q and Jay Rock.

SZA said that joining the TDE collective was significant.

"To be the first female on TDE is more...it's really just more important to me to be a part of TDE, rather than the first female," the singer said. "They've worked with girls in the past, incredible [artists] like Alori [Joh] and Jhene [Aiko]. So for me, it's just honestly being a part of a collective, such as TDE. That's what's more insane to me. They don't treat me like the girl, in the best ways though. No one tries to baby me or walk over me 'cause I'm a girl. They just let me fight for what I believe in and let me be as creative as I want to be and just give me free reign. So I love that." 

Prior to signing with TDE, SZA released a handful of projects, incluing last year’s See.SZA.Run and an EP titled S. The singer is also gearing up for the release of her Z EP, which is slated to feature the songs “Julia” and “Teen Spirit.”

Kanye West's "Gone" Hits Charts Eight Years After Its Release [Video]

A "Late Registration" selection hits the Hot 100 chart eight years after its release, likely thanks to Marina Shifrin's viral video.
Kanye West's Cam'ron and Consequence-assisted "Gone," a track off his 2005 album, Late Registration, debuted at #18 in the Hot 100 this week. "Gone" is also #6 on the R&B/Hip Hop Songs chart and #4 on the Rap Songs chart, as per billboard.com.
The Kanye West song gained popularity after being featured in a viral video recently.
The viral video featured writer and comedian Marina Shifrin who recently quit her job as a video editor. The clip showed her explaining her departure by dancing around an empty office to the tune of Kanye West's "Gone."
"On September 28th, I decided to leave my job as a journalist because I felt the industry wasn't doing justice to its talented writers," Shifrin wrote in an article on huffingtonpost.com. "I wanted to leave in a way that would make my parents laugh and do justice to my position as viral video editor. I came up with this video. I woke up the next day and found out a few people, 11 million and counting, had viewed it."
The video, which has more than 15 million views, can be viewed below. 

Shifrin was invited to "The Queen Latifah Show" to discuss the viral video's success. While on the program, Latifah appeared to offer Shifrin a job. 
"I want to be surrounded by cool, creative, interesting people," Latifah said. "And with your experience, maybe I could create a position. What if I created something called digital content producer? You think that might be something you're interested in?" Shifrin said she was interested and the two said they'd speak more about it. 
Digital sales of "Gone" have also gone up, as per billboard.com. The selection moved approximately 9,000 units this week, according to Nielsen Soundscan. YouTube reports 6.2 million streams of the song in the U.S., allowing the single to rank at #4 in the Streaming Songs chart. 
According to billboard.com, Kanye West now has 59 hits that have me Hot 100. Drake has 65, Jay Z has 80 and Lil Wayne has 120.

NEWS: COMEDY CENTRAL'S ANIMATED SERIES SOUTH PARK TACKLES TRAYVON MARTIN CONTROVERSY IN IT'S LASTEST EPISODE [VIDEO]

Comedy Central's "South Park" continues to prove there is no subject it will avoid and has addressed this year's controversial Trayvon Martin slaying in its latest episode.                      

The popular animated series relied on standout character "Eric Cartman" to showcase the episode.

Cartman dreams that he's ("f*ck you") Brad Pitt's character in World War Z, except instead of zombies, the world is plagued by black people who are upset over the Trayvon Martin verdict. And everyone talks like Cartman. They riot and even scale walls in a withering mass of bodies, like in Marc Forster's film. Meanwhile, back in reality, Cartman is mad at Token for not forgiving him, a white person, for what happened to Martin. He shares his feelings in a poem, "I Was Not the Bullet," before white boy rapping about what happened at a school assembly. The white kids "HEYYY," but Token and his sister don't "HOOO," and Cartman begins to freak out when Token calls out the maddening hypocrisy of what's going on. So much so that Cartman hijacks a woman's car, threatening her with a gun and the word "outbreak." (Uproxx)

Unlike what happened in real life, the "South Park" creators decided to kill former neighborhood watch worker George Zimmerman.

The news picks up the story. A crudely drawn Token is considered Patient Zero. Cartman purchases a gun from Ned and Jimbo to shoot Token before learning that your Stand Your Ground laws, where you can shoot someone in public if they threaten you, only exist in certain states, states like Florida. The military visits George Zimmerman to ask if he'll shoot and kill Token, a young black male. Zimmerman at first declines, but then shoots an approaching Cartman, wearing black face. The military considers him a hero...until they realize Cartman's not black; it's just shoe polish. George Zimmerman is quickly executed for killing a white kid. Cartman doesn't die from the gunshot wound. Once he recovers, he sees Token, and after spray painting a red circle around him on the street, he asks his friend for a "fist bump, bro." Cartman shoots Token in the chest. Stand Your Ground. But Token lives and refuses to make nice, so Cartman freaks out and steals a plane again. (Uproxx)

Since airing this week, the "South Park" episode has been applauded by critics.

As I mentioned earlier, this episode also had a solid ending, with Zimmerman getting the electric chair after shooting Cartman (disguised as a black kid), and Cartman (who can never seem to learn his lesson) turning his own gun on Token, shooting him pointblank and getting off scott-free. If that there doesn't sum it all up, I don't know what does. Delicately treading a fine line between hilarious and heinous, "World War Zimmerman" was a return to form for South Park, as it handily lampooned both the Trayvon Martin case and World War Z in one fell swoop. Over the past few months, Zimmerman has made headlines for criminal-related incidents.

George Zimmerman, himself, is a wealth of material, ripe for parody. Since his acquittal just over two months ago, Zimmerman has stayed in trouble. He's been pulled over twice for speeding, once on his way to a gun shop, and again for excessive tint on his car. He has also been accused of more serious crimes, including theft, for allegedly stealing from his in-laws to domestic abuse for allegedly threatening his soon-to-be ex-wife Shellie Zimmerman. No, Dee isn’t an 11-year-old boy, she is an Atlanta resident, a trick, and a lesbian rapper.

While basking in her newfound fame, Dee logged on to put her “skills” on display for us to laugh at. Ok, maybe that wasn’t her intent, but that will definitely be the result after you listen to her.

SPOILER In case you haven't seen Tuesday night's Catfish and plan on catching up later, skip this story... But, if you already watched the episode (or were like Nev Schulman and Max Joseph and realized we were dealing with a catfish after hearing the premise), then read on.
The most recent episode of Catfish was one of the strangest yet. At the center of it all was Keyonnah, a young mother from North Carolina. Against all odds, she believed she was in a serious relationship with Bow Wow — who happens to be a famous rapper and television host. As it turned how, Keyonnah was chatting with an Atlanta-based "musician" named Dee Pimpen. (Nev and Max spelled her name "Dee Pimpin" on the show, but judging from Dee's old Twitter account under @Dee_Pimpen515, she actually spells her last name — probably by mistake — with an "e" before the "n" at the end.)
Dee also happens to be a female who convinced her male cousin to talk with Keyonnah on the phone. As the duped Keyonnah summarized, "You're the Bow and she's the Wow."
It sure was complicated, but it made for good television — and the real Bow Wow wants to keep that rolling by inviting Keyonnah and Dee Pimpen to his show, 106 & Park.

"Somebody is actually impersonating me! Now, first of all, that's a hard thing to do. Hard thing to do. Just look at me. You can't impersonate this," Bow Wow said in the video, which was posted immediately after Catfish aired. "So, how do I feel about being catfished? Well, I feel honored. It's dope and it's flattering when somebody wants to be you. And, not only do they want to be you, in their mind they are you. That's crazy!"
The entertained added the exposure was also good for his show and his career, although he was slightly upset that MTV didn't give him more credit.

"Quite frankly, I would actually like to meet them both. So, here's a message out to the girl who got catfished and to the person who was pretending to be me. I am opening the door here at my house and I'm inviting you to come to 106 & Park so I can sit down and ask you two some questions... We can do it on my time, though. We can do it on my network, though. And on our show."
While wrapping up his message, Bow Wow had one final message for fans: "Everyone out there, Internet, cyber dating, just be sure you know who you're talking to. That's the best thing I can say."
