Another Rape Joke Heckler Posted by C.R. on 07/12/2012
I’d missed this video of stand-up comedian Godfrey responding to a heckler at the Comedy Cellar in New York (which is where “Louie” is partially filmed). Like Daniel Tosh’s situation, Godfrey’s heckler took offense at his discussion of rape. A white knight came to the female heckler’s defense which caused Godfrey to become aggressive and confrontational. Tosh’s opponents are angry that he personalized his rape joke to his heckler and the world stopped spinning as people discussed how out of line he was for suggesting that someone rape the woman, but Godfrey here actually attempts to pick a fight with his heckler’s white knight.
Godfrey touches on the same arguments as Tosh’s defenders – if you don’t like what a comedian is saying on stage, take it to You Tube or Twitter or a blog or whatever. Interrupting the set completely changes the dynamic and with Tosh we are now discussing his reaction to an interruption which should not have occurred in the first place.
To step back to Godfrey’s reaction to his heckler and her defender – this lends evidence to the argument that women tend to heckle more than men because they know they won’t have to square off with a guy if they piss him off. Godfrey shouts down the female heckler, but it’s not like a woman is going to lose much face by being called out for stupid behavior. Women can get away with almost anything without their reputation or ego being diminished. But when and if men act like jerks they stand a chance of coming to blows. That helps keep a pretty tight lid on these types of “microaggressions”.
