Amina Buddafly is a singer, songwriter, producer and cast member on “Love & Hip Hop: New York,” the fourth installment of the popular Vh1 reality series. Amina Buddafly is one of several new ladies on “Love & Hip Hop: New York,” which premieres on Oct. 28, and she joins Tara Wallace and Erica Jean.
But who is Amina Buddafly, besides another up-and-comer poised to get the gossip mills churning? She’s apparently “started a new relationship” with rapper-turned-manager Peter Gunz, according to MarketWatch, and that’s making for some intrigue on the “Love & Hip Hop” set, especially since Gunz has lived for years with Wallace, the mother of his two boys.
Born and raised in Hamburg, Germany, Amina Schmahl, aka Amina Buddafly, is the product of a music-loving German mother and Senegalese father who played a jazz musician. She could apparently sing before she could talk, and by the time she was 13, she’d begun writing songs. Alongside her older sister Sophie and her twin Jazz, she formed a trio called Black Buddafly, and in 1997, the group signed with BMG Germany. After releasing the single “Choyce,” they moved to New York City with little more than “$600 and a dream,” according to Vh1, and before long, they’d signed with Def Jam and J Records.
After Black Buddafly broke up and Sophie and Jazz had returned to Germany, she stuck with the music business and taught herself piano. Influenced by a range of artists—everyone from Mariah Carey to the Bangles—she became a songwriter and producer, and her cannon of songs includes some 400 compositions.
